Traffic Monetization with Tollbit
Integration Overview
TollBit is a DataDome partner enabling publishers to monetize AI/LLM scraping traffic. This integration establishes a controlled, revenue-generating channel for specific AI agents.
The integration process routes detected AI/LLM requests that match the Monetize response policy to a dedicated TollBit gateway (e.g., tollbit.yoursite.com). DataDome remains the authoritative system for bot detection and enforcement, while TollBit manages access control, usage analytics, policy rules, and billing for compliant AI agents.
Prerequisites
Before enabling the TollBit monetization flow, ensure the following requirements are met:
- You must be an active DataDome customer with Admin access to the Dashboard.
- You must have an active commercial relationship and configuration setup with TollBit.
- This includes configuring your TollBit account, publisher settings, pricing rules, and a dedicated monetization subdomain.
- Refer to the TollBit documentation for configuration details.
Monetization Flow and Traffic Routing
When the TollBit integration is configured, DataDome manages the detection and routing of eligible AI traffic.
The traffic flow sequence is:
- AI Agent Requests content: An AI/LLM agent initiates a request to your content (e.g.,
yoursite.com/page1.html). - DataDome Analyzes and Classifies: DataDome analyzes the request, classifies the agent, and checks the configured response policy for this agent.
- DataDome Redirects Eligible Traffic: If the the policy is set to
Monetize, DataDome issues an HTTP 302 redirect to your designated TollBit gateway (e.g.,tollbit.yoursite.com/page1.html). - TollBit Enforces Policy: The TollBit gateway handles authorization, applies licensing or pricing rules, and enforces access control for the AI agent.
TollBit Bot Response Policy
Since the tollbot is used by the monetization partner (TollBit), it must be explicitly allowed to ensure the successful delivery of monetized content.
- Navigate to Access Control > AI Agents in the DataDome Dashboard.
- Use the search function to locate the
tollbotagent. - Confirm the Response policy is set to Allow. Update the policy if required.
Visibility and Reporting
Monitoring the monetization flow is split between the DataDome Dashboard and TollBit's analytics platform. This ensures end-to-end visibility across both security enforcement and monetization activity.
DataDome Dashboard
All requests, including those redirected to TollBit, are visible within the DataDome Dashboard.
TollBit Analytics
TollBit provides complementary analytics on monetized usage. This includes data on:
- AI bot activity and traffic volumes.
- Top-accessed URLs by monetized agents.
- Revenue insights.
For complete analytics details, refer to the TollBit Publisher Documentation.
